Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Welcome to Matt and Sam’s first holiday letter! It feels so strange to be writing our first “grown-up” holiday letter as a married couple. The past few months have been full of those moments, but each week, married life gets slightly more normal. Here’s a glance at what we’ve been up to!
After our honeymoon near Hood River, OR, we returned to Salem to house sit for Sam’s parents while they went on vacation. By the end of July, they were home and we moved into our first apartment in Moscow, ID, where Matt began his first year of medical school through the University of Washington. It’s a good thing Matt has a BA in sociology as he has been juggling a mess of identities: University of Idaho student, Washington State University student and a University of Washington student (plus being a husband!). Anyways, Moscow is a cute university town with quirky coffee shops, a super-organic Co-Op Market, and a John Deere dealership. So far, we’ve enjoyed exploring the variety of dining experiences, small businesses and are looking forward to more snow-filled activities.
A few days after arriving in Moscow, Sam was hired as a caregiver at Bishop Place Assisted Living in Pullman, WA. It was a great blessing for her to get a job so quickly (to pay off undergraduate loans!). She worked nearly full-time through the fall in addition to taking Anatomy and Abnormal Psychology at the University of Idaho. She is finished with her pre-requisites for graduate school and will take the GRE in February before applying for a Master’s program in Physician Assistant Studies at Idaho State University. In her spare time, Sam has been developing her cooking skills, learning to drive in the snow and volunteering with the middle school program at our church.
As for Matt, he’s been busy with medical school! He has classes with 43 other students from Idaho and Washington. His classes are taught by local physicians and professors from UI and WSU, so it’s definitely been a unique educational experience. This semester, Matt completed 37 credit hours and is now 12.5% a doctor! Only 3.5 more years to go! J Matt is enjoying medical school and the healthy mix of challenges, fun, and stress it provides (minus the tension headaches…). For the past two months, Matt spent his Tuesday’s practicing medicine with a local general surgeon as the first assist on a variety of surgeries. Outside of classes, Matt is also working with a few classmates, a local physician, and some community leaders to help develop a free medical clinic in Pullman, which they hope to open in the spring.

As you can see we’re enjoying life in Moscow, but are also
looking forward to moving back to Seattle in August for Matt’s second year of
medical school. It will be great to be back in the city and near our friends
from PLU!
Best wishes,
Best wishes,
Matt and Sam Peters
